What is Blender missing that other software has?

As the title says in terms of modeling, what is blender missing that makes other software much better for developing games in Unreal Engine 4. This is my main goal.

Pretty icons ?

If you just want to make models for UE then all 3D applications including blender pretty much all do the same thing.

What do you actually want to model ? What do you want your model to do in your game ? What are your requirements for the modelling application ?
For the different modelling applications go to their respective websites, read their feature set, download their trial versions and see which you prefer using.

This is why I tried to prevent a previous fiasco from repeating. I simply asked a question that deals with stats, like maybe there are features not in Blender that exists in other software that would be necessary for Unreal Engine 4 game design.

I know for instance Blender has high poly count unlike indie versions of other software that has a 100k limit

I realize asking questions about opinions is usually a bad idea.

Migraine plane(aka workspace plane ) from modo… actually I hope blender doesn’t take this one, beside you can get similar functionality by messing with the setting a bit

really good projection tools , from modo, Won’t deny it, modo’s projection tools are great.

Really good falloffs from modo again…

And…

Generate topology/Set flow from 3DS max, you can technically get similar functionality with the unsubdivide button for Generate topology and you can cheat Set flow using loop tools. But 3ds max still takes this one.

Really,
There’s nothing deal breaking for Game modelling(apart from lightmapping, but you are using Unreal engine 4 anyway so…)

When you get to movies on the other hand…

Some things:

  • PBR viewport. You have no idea how your mesh will actually look in game. If you use texturing software like Substance this doesn’t matter that much.
  • Reliable FBX import/export. Export actually works fine if you use metric units and 0.01 scale but this is a bit newbie unfriendly. Import doesn’t work that well, especially with the UE4 mannequin rig, which can be kind of a pain. If you use your own rig it doesn’t matter though.
  • No APEX plugin. Kind of niche I guess but you have to use the standalone APEX tool which isn’t great. You have to have at least one vertex bound to 4+ bones if you want to use several bones or you can’t load the APEX file in UE4. This isn’t a Blender issue though from what I know.

None of these are huge issues though and Blender is fine for use with UE4.

Thanks, does not look like its anything important that I am missing for making a game with Unreal Engine 4

In modeling? without plugins blender have limitations like custom normals, with addons this don’t happens.

Non destructive/parametric modeling…

@Regnas

How could I forget, blender needs it’s own Edit poly modifier…

The Snapshot Meshes add-on is quite useful in this regard. It allows you to save versions quickly and efficiently. And duplicating an object preserves all snapshots as well. Very handy.

john5220 - I’ve been working on Inner Chains game since 9 months. Fairly big project with high quality graphics. We have mixed pipeline in our studio. One maya, two maxes and me on blender. I haven’t found ANY limitation in blender that prevented me to doing my job. Mind that I’m quite technical guy. I do some demanding stuff like complex material setups (multiple UV channels, masks, layering) that need to be prototyped beforehand and blender do good in this sort of things.
After all whats matter is your skill, not money you’ve spent on software.

Of course there are some nice features in Max and other programs I want in blender. But on the other hand there are bunch of things blender can do better. Just today my colleague showed me some modeling improvements made in Max2017. That was basically our bevel modifier we have since 6 or more years (cannot find). I stayed quiet because I don’t want to be perceived as fanboy with all this “blender have that” shouts.

@Monio

Lol yeah

the 3ds max bevel modifier is called quad chamfer

and the funny thing is it originally was a plugin that costed 50 USD

well i think a good undo, and a save everyting by default (including textures that have not been written to disk, some check to pack them inside the blend, if not saved external outside the blend, or if their last change was not saved to disk (in case of updating- painting textures).

not comparing against anything 3d specific, but as a windows user i’m kinda used to dialogs are you sure ?, save everything or exit.

And perhaps maybe some auto versioning system an optional numbering added to blend files on each save.

OMG that games look so incredible holy crap!!!

If blender is capable of all that then my goodness this is an Amazing software, right now I am forcing myself to use it so I can like it. I have no other choice because MODO is too expensive you know the funny thing my issue with blender seem to be nothing like difficult to use or missing features, my issue seems to be the GUI isn’t fancy looking like MAYA or MODO.

So I am trying to get around this psychological issue I know sound silly but when you are using your first software you tend to be attracted to nice pretty looking GUI like MODO etc. So I am trying to train my brain around that seeing as Blender is free.

Its too bad other companies don’t have a plan like allow you to use their software and when you make a certain amount of money from your games they will take a percentage of your profits like Epic does with UE4.

To clarify. All of our artist use also Zbrush and Substance Painter/Designer. These have features/quality you won’t find in any 3D package. However, if you starts with 3D, blender sculpting and will be ok for you. I recommend Substance Indie subscription for texturing, it’s just 20usd/month. Or download blender PBR branch and learn nodes.

Have you ever wondered what those .blend1 files were whenever you save? That’s what that is. In fact, you can increase the number of them from User Preferences.

More cow bell.

blender is getting almost everything it needs in 2.8

only thing missing is bullet 3 and some Vr tool kits(viewport windows as textured planes inside the viewport)

Lets not be hasty when saying “blender is getting almost everything it needs”. Even if you implied “not all” there is so much small stuff still missing. Not be blunt but all these missing things and upkeep for refactored base systems / structures, I don’t think blender will be anyway near 2.78 or 79 until at least 3 years.
