Basic Maritime routes Blender Game Engine. sail downloads

Downloads and site withdrawn!

I make basic maritime routes in the Blender Game Engine.
Basic to mean as simple as possible as some are available for download.
I tried posting on the finished games but that post vanished.
Also I noticed new members can’t add url link but have put my website url in the details page.

I have made 2 size of routes over the years using srtm2 data. I found that the 50 km size had problems but they were possible to make but now deleted. 20 km size seems OK.
Many of the routes are ‘basic’ as always something to to make/alter and work on over the years…unless the game engine alters in future editions.

Working my way around part of the UK coastline starting from Solway Firth. 28 made so far and some for download.
All routes will have terrain, some with rivers opened up. all will have roaming camera and drivable sailing ship/boat or sailing flat using simple offset collision box, changed from dynamiic to rigid body for drivable. Sea flat sheet animated to rise and fall a meter to simulate wave swell. One has tidal rise.
Two Liverpool routes 1 and half and 3 miles of docks 1800 an 1833. Working locks at Ellesmere Port.
Most routes will be basic to begin with and a few will have simple scenarios.

Apparently I can’t add url as new member but have put it in details page if that works.

Trying to further the cause of maritime routes in Blender Game Engine over a good few years.
I post on the ship simulator forum section in UK train simulator forum UKTS.

Barry and happy sailing in the Blender.

To continue this thread the routes can be regarded as completed or work in progress as these types of simulations can never be ‘completed’. Simulations are different to a game as an endless amount of content can be made and varying ships routes made, scenarios can be altered or removed. Another factor is that they are based on the past ages and bygone times of about two centuries ago so endless alterations can be made as more details are found relating to the era.

Barry

The routes could be set in a variety of eras if you wish and ships could be sailing ships, paddle steamers, coastal steamers, etc. For the larger later ships you might need to create a lower seabed and deep water channels. Also if working on my routes perhaps give feedback and if different effects to what I have made perhaps give feedback on how you created them. Queries and feedback welcome as regards how to alter things…if they will work in the BGE.

Also please inform if textures don’t load etc and queries or just confirm they work OK. What I see on my computer might be different to what you see dependant if the textures are read from the texture folder. Before I had the textures in each seperate route folder. There are probably numerous small scenarios that can be made and in the Annan route the ships is driven to collect cargo from the quayside. Ships could be launched from slipways. Also shipwrecks and capsize ships. Also any amout of preset animated ship movements can be created to visit the ports and harbours.

I think what I have posted so far covers my interests as regards the Blender Game Engine. i have no idea if the routes will still work in the future updates of Blender?

As my posts are dependant on interest in the maritime possibilities of the Blender Game Engine I will probably make this my last post… but dependant on interest and queries etc (if any). As mentioned I make 20 km maritime routes in the Blender Game Engine and there are several available from my site. 50 km routes are possible bt have to use a workaround to mover vertices outside 10km form centre.

I have been making these routes for several years in Blender and although basic much can be done. i cretted a simple method to make ships and boats floating/drivable using offset collision box and changed form dynamic to ‘rigid body’.

Anyway once I have tested the 1837 route of Liverpool and the river Mersey I will probably make it available today or tomorrow. It has been online previously but using a single folder now for textures for all routes and have to remake the texture links on all the routes. The 1800 Liverpool route is also available including working locks at Ellesemere Port and One and half miles of docks. Drivable schooner or sailing flats in all routes etc, roaming camera and the river Alt route i made with half a tidal rise.

However the 1837 now has enlarged main dock at Ellesmere Port barge lock and the working barge locks. The docks also are based on plans and have now grown to three miles of docks. If you want a scenario you could ‘sail’ the schooner the length of the docks and navigate the sailing flat up the pair of locks at Ellesmere Port barge dock.

So my interest is centred around maritime routes in the Blender Game Engine. I they become unusable due to future updates to the game engine in Blender I will need to try and find an alternative open source method.

I have uploaded the 1837 Liverpool Docks and river Mersey route and the details seem to have gone onto my site OK.
As this route is the most complex of the routes that I have made so far there are a lot of details. Please post if queries or problems or if the textures don’t load. It appears OK on my own computer. However what I see and what others see might differ as regards the links to textures, etc.

Also see the readme which informs which keyboard keys operate the Ellesmere Port Locks and set in motion the animations.
There are also boats preset as animation on different courses and driveable schooner for the main Liverpool Docks and the sailing flat for the Ellesmere Port Locks.
You will also need to download the textures folder as I had to add a few textures to it so it is updated. This goes inside the MAIN routes folder and the textures are read from it.
Make sure when extracting from the zip file that you do not have 2 folders of the same name inside each other or textures wont load.
Also see my site which has all the details.

So at time of writing 12 routes available of 28. I might have to reduce the quantity as depends on space available. Routes will be updated as an ongoing process so they can never be ‘completed’. Also the available routes might change or others might be made.
Also as mentioned in previous post it depends on interest/discussion/your help, etc, as regards my further posting, but my website will still be available (at time of writing) if I don’t post further.

Barry

Regarding queries help etc I also have a thread in Blender Game Engine ‘works in progress and game demos’ . From what I can gather, best to post any queries/discussion etc relative to my 'available routes or relative maritime functions on that thread? Barry

I have posted details of completed maritime routes in the completed game engine games forum (maritime simulations my case). Regarding relevant queries/help/discussion perhaps best to use this forum and thread (if any)? Thanks. Barry.

.

So far little interest in the maritime simulations so a change of plan. Although I deleted all the 50 km size maritime routes I will try and remake them. It needs a few work-arounds. I use a script that works up to 2.49b Blender for the terrain, and srtm2 data . Then change to current Blender to set it up. There is a script that will work with the current Blender but it creates too many vertices if over 20,000 meters. With the earlier script I can adjust the vertices but only works up to 2.49b. With setting the depths I will just use the keyboard as they fly back if typed in and over 10,000 meters from centre. These details just to outline the method. Also although using a seperate folder for textures saves download space, changed my mind on this and will enclose textures in route folder as before in the zip file together with blender file and readme.

This thread is relevant to the completed routes as started and made the first in the series again around the UK coastline. Number i starts at the Solway Firth. I have to set it up with the zip file. I might upload later today or tomorrow. All routes will start from the basic route… Terrain textured, flat sea plane probably animated to simulate wave swell, roaming camera and maybe the driveable schooner. Rivers will not be opened up but routes will be made and updated on an ongoing basis. I will post further in response to queries or discussion, otherwise details and available downloads will be on my site. I will probably only leave 5 of the 50 km routes available for download when made as 1 large is equal to about 3 of the 20 km routes as regards coastline length. I will probably rotate or change them from tme to time

Whether anything will work when the 2.8 series starts I have no idea, so the reason for outlining the method is perhaps others might be able to solve any relevant maritime Blender function problems . So far I have created a simple method to make ships floating and driveable. Solved the vibration and climb out of boats by changing to ‘rigid body’ from dynamic. Linked flat planes creates the sea depth using keyboard not typed…and so on.

P.S.Endless maritime types of routes can be made canals, locks, docks, etc. etc

Uploaded the Solway ‘basic’ route to start off once more the 50 km series around UK coastline (or part coastline). Routes will start off as basic as detailed in the previous post. Probably keep 5 to ten on line and vary them and gradually start removing the 20 km size routes. Barry

Full Isle of Man route available. As I add the 50 km size routes they will replace the 20 km size routes. Initially these routes are basic as explained in the post… ‘sailable floating’ ship or boat, roaming camera, rise and fall of water plane. etc. Based on srtm2 satellite data for terrain. At later date rivers opened up , ports, trees, quays, scenarios maybe added, etc . will probably add more over the next few days. See site for details. B

With no feedback or discussion it is difficult to know how to continue.
So start again and I will delete the routes from my site for a different framework to base it on.
All the routes are made as regards the basics but as mentioned they can never be completed as simulations are different to games as you can always work on them as an ongoing process over the years which is what I am doing.

So starting from Solway Firth and the Gretna route there are 26 of the 20 km size routes made following around the coastal UK.
As I don’t know what will work with forthcoming updates of Blender I will go back to to 20 km size and also keep the seperate textures with each route not reading from a seperate textures folder.

All I need to do is check through them and zip them up to place online. Keep maybe up to 10 online and rotate them up to number 26. The routes are numbered 1 to 26 and follow around the UK coastline. Also started on a few more making up to 28. So far around to Barmouth Noth Wales including Conwy castle. Menai Straits etc.

By using this method the latest script then could be used as the vertices it creates up to say 20km are manageable. Also they won’t fly back if limited to 10,000 meters either side of xyz when typed in. Much easier then to open up rivers etc by lowering terrain. I was under the impression that there would be simulations of real life available on these forums but it mainly seems to be small games unless there is another forum for Blender Simulations.

I have used a few different commercial ship simulators making content over several yaers but find that the Blender game Engine has enough functions to create reasonably realistic simulations as regards maritime including tidal rise as shown in my River Alt route amd miles of docks are possible as in the Liverpool routes. The era is difficult to set and currently age of sail but 2 Liverpool routes made 1800 and 1837 dock layouts. So over the next few days I will remove all routes and start putting the sequence of 20 km routes back on line for download.

Barry

10 maritime routes back online at 20km approx.

B

Made it the round dozen and will hold at that for now. Plenty more made but will start rotating them when I add more for download. Add one to end and remove one from beginning. Also as mentioned although all routes are ‘complete’ meaning usable, they can never be finished as it will be an ongoing process. If updated I will change the date so they don’t overwrite a previous route.
B

From what I have read this looks interesting, but I can’t take that much data at once. Could you explain your goal in a few sentences ?

There is no goal. Just like a train simulator you make routes that interest you.
My interest is coastal UK including the river systems that have sailing ships on them or barges.
Era I try to create is around early 19th century but includes much guesswork.

I found that you can make reasonable ship routes using the Blender Game Engine.
Commercial ship simulators are the same but only a few have a scenery designer.
As regards what you make my routes are based on satellite srtm2 data…if it has water for maritime.
Also of course you can make docks etc in Blender Game Engine and I also have working small locks in the Mersey route.

Barry

Sounds good Barry but lots of people here are very visual minded. It would help if you could post some pictures or even some youtube videos of gameplay.
“Wall of text” type posts don’t get read, because a lot of people access this site on their phones and usually don’t have time to read a novel length update about a game with no pictures.

If you have some important information about the game it’s best to put in a text file and pack it with the game.

Also, Blender artists is a great place to get feedback about your game, but interest is mostly limited to technical and game development concerns. To get feedback about more specialist aspects of your game (the maritime element) it’s a good idea to post elsewhere. Reddit is a good place to find communities devoted to things like that.

Heres a sub-reddit devoted to simulation gaming;

For publishing you could try somewhere like Gamejolt which has good support for tracking number of dowloads, posting news and updates and other media to help hook people on your game.

Thanks

Barry

I have thinned my posts down to just the BASIC DETAILS!
IF of interest refer to my home page of my web site… link is to the left of each of my posts.
I can only reply to queries or discussion ‘relevant to’ maritime routes in Blender Game Engine.
