You have missed out two things to aid you using fonts (for any operating system)
Set the font directory in the User Preferences / File options so that you are in the font directory when you go and select a font
Set the file browser to Thumbnail so you can preview the font when you are selecting it
Oh, that was a really good way to do it too.
