Layers within linked proxied rig?

Got a rigged character with lots of image layers. Grouped, linked and proxied into another file.
In that other file I can’t see the image layers and mesh, neither in the linked nor the proxy, only the armature. I need to animate visibility of some layers. Is there something I need to do here?

I, and I guess others also, can’t even begin to guess what the issue is as you have not posted a blend file…
