Animating on top of video

I’m relatively new to Blender, but have a project in mind I would love to do, but have a technical question about it. I am using the latest version.

I have a 3 minute video (of a fight scene) that I want to remake as a 3d animation. I want to make it as exact as possible - same movements, same camera angles, same effects, etc.

My question is, can I get this video clip into Blender and have it as a background so I can animate my characters “on top” of the footage? And also be able to skip through the video frames while animating? Basically, I want to achieve the drawing over effect like if you put paper over an image you wanted to draw - just with animation instead.

In the 3d view, in the properties panel (n-key), under background images, you can use either images or a movie clip. I’ve never used a movie clip before, so I’m not sure of the settings (consult the wiki), but I have used it for images before and it works good for that.
