OS- Ubuntu 16.04 64bit
Blender 2.78a
Installed on repo running;
$ sudo apt-get install blender
No particle button found (pls see attached photo)
Please advise how to fix it? Thanks

You have currently a curve object selected - you can’t add a particle system to those.
Convert “Circle” to mesh with Alt-C.
