Flowergirl and the Beetle

A tender scene of a little paper girl handing a paper flower to a Rhinoceros Beetle, the beetle looks in all curiosity and suspicion to the girl and her father.

The idea for this scene just popped into my head all of the sudden. I went to work by first creating the beetle and then the scene around it. The original idea was a little different, having a character riding it, but while making the work I decided to have characters in front. An earlier version of the beetle that I published wasn’t as detailed and realistic, so after putting in another night of work, re-sculpting the beetle and making better textures, it really started to shine!

The lighting is set up with three spot lights and an environment light. Two spotlights have a colored texture to add depth to the lighting, and fake shadows are used to create a feeling of the sun falling through the tree line. The compositing is fully done in blender. I used a modified Filmic Blender for the color management.
