Cycles GPU rendering to use system memory if runs out of VRam?

Was just wondering if cycles will ever switch to using system ram if gpu vram runs out. NVidia iRay does this. Obviously it will be slower but slower is better than stopping.

Hi, there is a patch already for using max. 50% system ram during render on GPU.
Was about 10% slower than VRAM but was working fine on my cards.
That patch was probably forgotten.

What’s the current status regarding this?

I’m really interested in seeing this integrated into blender. I’m building latest 2.8 branch from source with this diff, hoping it all works out. Will update this post and let you guys and gals know.
