The simple Way for adding a Sound Meter

Hello everyone,

Since I use the Blender VSE for video editing, I really miss some features regarding sound. As I cannot expect anybody to code tools for audio in Blender, I decided to give coding them as an addon a try.
The most important missing feature is for me a sound meter (similar to that in eg Audacity). It is really not that easy to keep sound on a constant volume only by ear. And now the fun part: The only usable way I found to get a sound meter in Blender seems to pipe the audio through PulseAudio and then to fetch the volume information from PulseAudio. And installing PulseAudio as a whole sound server seems unnecessarily overpowered. So my question is: Are you aware of a more straightforward solution for a live sound meter in Blender using Python?

Thanks very much in advance!
