Parenting to a pre-weight painted mesh

At some point I deleted the rig to my mesh but the weight painting still remains. Is there a way to reparent the mesh to the metarig?

Did you backup your file… ever? If you can recreate the armature exactly, with the same bone names as the vertex groups (that is very important) You can simply parent the Mesh to the Armature by keying CTRL+P => “Object” - then add an armature modifier and set the target at the new armature…

Awesome, it worked. I just had to generate the actual rig from the metarig in order for it to work but the process worked. Thanks.
