Weighting a mesh to a specific set of bones

I’m back to my hair project. My hair mesh needs to be weighted to a specific set of bones in the armature. Is there a way to auto-weight the mesh to a selection of bones? There are probably around 40 bones in the head/shoulders, but only 3 bones need to be used when calculating weights (the others are there for things like “lip size”, “cheek position” etc).

Yes, by using auto weights in weight paint instead of the parenting shortcut. Mesh needs the armature modifier and armature needs to be in pose mode, then it’s possible to select bones in weight paint mode.
