Best way to do water for an aquarium/pond

As the title says I’m at a loss how exactly to best achieve a water effect for e.g. an Aquarium. I know there’s fluid simulation but I wondered if that’s really necessary, as my main focus isn’t the water itself but more what’s inside it. I’ve been looking for a tutorial but everyone just seems to be interested in fluid sim. Could I just make a cube with water material and volumetric(?) lighting? And how I go about making little waves/ripples on the surface. Another problem is that, as it is an Aquarium, you can not only see the surface of the water but also the sides, so just a plane isn’t going to be enough, I think? Anyway, all hints are greatly appreciated.
