How to make a lunar surface?

Hello all. I am making a lunar base model and need some assistance in creating a lunar surface to go with it. Can anyone point me to documentation to help in this or provide suggestions here? I’m assuming texturing is the way to go. I considered particles since the lunar surface is mainly powder but I think that wouldn’t make sense in how much resources it would require from Blender.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Take a look at the microdisplacements thread - there is a cratered surface material on there.

If you want maps of real moons, look in the NASA photo archives.
If you want to make your own maps, check out these PS moon brushes:

Depending on the scale, you may want to just model a few craters and put a rocky dust material on it.

there is an OSL script to make Lunar craters
