Roger, Gary and Bob

Hello,
Here’s Roger, Gary and Bob !

I’m new (a few weeks) to Blender, but not really new to CGI. I’ve
benn using POV-Ray with some dedication from 1993 to 2004, rarely
since, and, as an architect, used AutoCAD and Sketchup to produce
a handful of 3D work. I decided to produce a remake of this image
I made with POV-Ray in 1998 (!) as an exercise to learn the basics
of Blender today.

All objects modeled by me, rendered in Cycles, lighting and
materials could be improved (most materials are too clean and simple),
but I wasn’t aiming for hyper-realism neither. The keyboard is modelled
upon my beloved IBM model M, I plan to make it availiable on Blender Swap
(giving back…). The picture on the screen is a screenshot of Blender 1.6
I made using a Win2000 virtual machine.

I knew about Blender almost since it’s been available, and remember
the “buy source” campaign, but the interface at the time acted as
a deterrent to me. I’m quite impressed about how Blender evolved
over the years, and the present ecosystem of tutorials and ressources !
Extraordinary software, that is.

Thanks to everyone involved in Blender’s development, to “Love 3D” in this
forum for helping with the notes out of the gramophone, to “sizzler” for
the proc. wood found on Blender Swap, and to Jean-Marie, my friend who
initiated the concept of the original image (shown below).

Hi Fabien!

I remember seeing your name, and this render, from the days of the IRTC. It brings back memories.

I also used POV-Ray from 95 to 98, and then switched to Blender. I always wanted to do a remake of one of my old works, and I just might. But I’m glad to see that you already did.

Hi Fabien! I also remember this from the IRTC days! I used POV-Ray as well, which is what got me interested in procedural textures. Glad you could make use of one of them.

Welcome to the Blender world!
