on a tute i saw that some versions show what the text looks like before you load it.

It should preview fonts. Need to make sure that the filters are set to show font files, and the display option is set to show thumbnails…
EDIT: I am on Linux, but I don’t think that should make a difference. I’m also on 2.78c but remember the font previews for quite some time now.
Disregard! I just downloaded 2.69. It doesn’t preview fonts.
