Modifier Decimate > select un-subdivide and set iteration: 1 > Apply.

It is a good way for create grating too. ( using wireframe modifier in addition then )
Un-subdivide tool is a bit faster. One extra subdivision for the area, then ctrl+E -> un-subdivide, iterations to 1.
