large model is disapearing in viewport

Hi I am Niek, this is my first post on the forum. At the moment I am exploring the possibilities in blender and how to fit it in the pipeline.

I have a large 3d object (OBJ) imported in Blender.
Do I have to use MTL file in blender?
Is there a way to retrieve the materials and textures… from Mental Ray and/or Vray.
Viewport seems to have problems with the large scene. I can not see the entire scene cause of clipping in the viewport. (not in the camera) maybe I can change some settings for this other then scaling down?

View start and end clipping distance in properties panel (shortcut N)
Camera start and end clip distance in camera properties

Ideally you don’t want to have very very very large or very very very small objects in the viewport
