particles inside a given volume how to ?

any sample file for using cycles volume particles inside a given volume
like a semi cylinder or a cube or other shape ?

also brief explanations on how to do it

note: I do have the sponge example
but very difficult to control transparency and density inside the volume

I got this model but particles group are not random

is there a way to get it more random along the cylinder ?
