mesh distribution with hair emitter help?

so, i’m trying to give a character some sparse feathering, but trying to use ‘duplicate object’ does this:

the feathers all just kind of float around the model, instead of attaching to the surface. changing hair length brings them closer, but also causes them to get smaller.
i’d also like to know how to control the direction they’re facing, and generally get them where i want them

just so you know, i’m pretty new to using particle systems (or at least, really bad at it). so this is partly an inexperience problem, i think.
if anyone can help, thank you!

Just an off-the-cuff guess here … if you have children particles enabled, make sure you set it to “interpolated” and not “simple.” Mine did the same thing.

this happened… :expressionless:

The origin on your dupli object is probably far away from the center of your object. Move the origin to the center. Tools panel (left) select object, ‘set origin’ button, choose 'center of mass.

oh, that worked! thank you :3
(whoops i put the wrong image. here’s the successful one)
