Onion skinning for 3D objects?

I know we have this feature for bones, but that doesn’t really help to see the silhouette of the character being animated. Maya allows you to enable onion skinning, and even edit the curves of the animation in the viewport itself!
Is it possible to get something like this in blender?

Dupliframes

I don’t see how that could help with onion skinning

Could this do it?

I think currently Blender does not allow mesh onion skinning.

that script is old and doesnt work anymore, it’d be nice if someone could create a similar one based on grease pencil strokes, it’d be light, fast, and perfect

Ah ok thanks - Just noticed that you are in Barcelona - I was just there this week. I liked it more than Madrid.

so what I’m getting is, there’s no new tools have/are being developed that would give me this feature

Motion path, frame duplication, driven dupliframe values

holy smokes that actually works!
though, it doesn’t seem to be working on a rigged character
only object animations work with this method
