Simulations and not just games. Maritime. in the Blender Game Engine.

The reason few people have shown interest in your project is because it is hard to see at a glance what it is. We can read it, yes, but show us pictures or videos. People need to know what they’re getting into before they show interest in a project. Maybe I’ll have a look at your project anyway, because it does sound interesting. Even at this stage, you need to consider (essentially) marketing your simulation, even if it is free, and even if it is only at BA forum users.

The reason mods close your threads is because it’s generally polite to have just one thread per project. (You can probably agree with the fact that if a user makes 20 threads on the same subject it gets a bit annoying).

there is next to nothing about true to life simulations

That’s because these are very very hard to do. Much harder than creating a fun game.

Your threads are locked when they go off-topic. In WIP you can pretty much post whatever you like, but in Support & Discussion, and Resources, you need to be concise and on-topic.

Firstly; being an older person shouldn’t dictate which engine you use. It’s entirely a case of whichever you’re comfortable with, and can solve the task.

Concerning route sizes, I suggest you design routes into smaller sections, and look into level streaming.

The reason that simulations aren’t commonly done here is that they are hard; you have more to “simulate” in order to keep people interested. You should ask yourself who you’re developing this for. If it’s solely for your own interest, great - do what you find interesting. But if you want others to be interested too, that’s a hard job. Personally, I wouldn’t spend too long on a maritime simulator unless there was some depth to the simulation; just moving a boat down a canal would lose my interest quite soon.

Revised post

There is absolutely nothing relevant to my queries so far about the future of Blender or in the replies!!

This script has changed to the previous version so I am unable to use it as it is creating 3 times as many vetices and might lockup computer.

This !. There is no reason to start multiple threads all discussing the same thing. One is enough

I would like to add there does not seem to be a forum that fits what I make going by the ‘comments’.
The correct forum for finished games/simulations (makes no difference) is https://blenderartists.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?39-Finished-Games

What is your exact query about srtm2 data and the updated terrain script as that is what this thread is about? Please note I can only reply to relevant queries on this thread. B

I have ZERO interest in srtm2 data. Should I have to if I’m responding to comments made in this thread ?

End of my posts. B

@barrymaritime:
If you have a technique that will be useful to other people, such as converting the STRM2 data, then make a post about how to work with strm2 data in the resources frum. It should not mention your project significantly, but just a mini-tutorial on where to get it, how to process it etc.
If you have something you are working on (eg your simulations) they should go in the WIP forum
If you have a question or are struggling with a problem, it should go in the discussion forum.

It is clear that what you wanted to ask in this thread and what people thought you were asking was different. I now gather that your question is:
Will my game/simulations continue to run in future versions of the game engine?
To which the answer is … yes, probably. It is always the goal of BGE to provide backwards compatibility. If there are issues, then you can report them as bugs and the developers will (hopefully) fix them.

Actually, I think there were several topics in this thread. It is normal to create one thread per topic, that way simple people like me don’t get confused.

Thanks for your reply.

Geting tired shunting between forums and comments so a change of plan.
The srtm2 script has altered (see my links this page for srtm2 data and for script).
So due to possible forthcoming changes in Blender I will concentrate just on the harbours with surrounding area NOT routes.

So might try the WIP forum. Any details for downloads (if available) will be on my site not on the completed games forum as 2 entirely different things!

Probably this post is now ‘off topic’ but ties up this thread from my point of view and might avoid me abandoning ship ( Blender Artists).

Harbours will be one topic to include ship animation to make it workable!
