Sculpting a CPU or GPU intensive activity?

Hi folks,

I have a pretty powerful workstation (3rd gen Core i7 3.2Ghz, Geforce Titan X Pascal and 64GB RAM) but I find that sculpting a 6M polygon model is still fairly laggy. It’s mostly the rotating and panning of the camera but it also feels like I’m sculpting “tougher” clay than if I’m working on a 4.5M polygon or less model let’s say.

If I wanted to speed things up, would I
a) upgrade MoBo and CPU (e.g. i7 6900X) or the latest Ryzen
b) upgrade / add GPU
c) upgrade RAM
or d) all of the above?

Would HD speed have any effect on performance?

Thanks!
jan

Hi.
Open some CPU/GPU monitor and put it in the foreground. Then you open Blender and work with heavy meshes in Sculpt mode (Dyntopo, Multires), edit mode, etc. This way you will be able to find out what resources are most used in each case.

You should keep in mind that perhaps yours is not a hardware problem, and it’s just because you are at the limit of what Blender can handle.
