Dynamic Paint to Control Particle Emission

So I’m doing a VFX shot where I have an object that I want to dissolve from one side to the other using the explode modifier. I attempted to use dynamic paint to paint a weight map to control which parts of the mesh emit particles which could be animated. I set up a vertex group to which I tried to link the dynamic paint weight map to but when I set it to control the density setting in the particle panel it has no effect. Am I missing a step or is this not possible in blender? It will work if I’m using a hair system to control density and length but not emission particles.
