Setup a database for 3d models and textures

Hi, I am wondering how other people setup there database for models and textures.

I have my system working on a network (NAS). I use one part for textures and models.
I orderd my models and textures in submaps.
When importing sketchup files it places al those textures in one map... what is the best way to handle this?
Also searching models in the database is not very handy, I can not see if a model is High or low quality and stuff like that.
Luckely I do know what everything is and does.
So biggest question is> what do you to keep the constantly growing database in shape.

    Kind regards,

    Niek
