Is there a scheduled release date for 2.79

Just wondering. I have the 2.78.5 test release. Thanks for any info.

schedule - Blender 2.7x: Latest Production-Ready Version

Okay…thanks for the info. Do you have a link to the 2.79 test build? I only saw the 2.78x test files.

There are links to all blender versions from the official blender.org download page.

Testbuilds: https://download.blender.org/release/Blender2.79/
Most recent daily builds https://builder.blender.org/download/
Also for latest info https://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:Doc/Projectshttps://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:Doc/Projects

The latest test build is up to 2.80. Am I better downloading that? ie. is it more stable and bugfixed than 2.79? More importantly does it have the “principled” shader? Totally dying to try that one out!

simply do what your mind asks you to & get experienced (try all)

ATM, 2.80 is a stripped down version, no layers for one thing. I’m sure there are other things still missing as it’s a work in progress.

Do not use 2.80 versions if you don’t want to risk losing all your work and have more unstability then either 2.78/2.79. It is still under early development so for testing purposes ONLY

I’ve been using 2.79 RC1 (actually labeled 2.78.5) for a few days and I’ve had absolutely no trouble with it. So far, only a few bugs have been reported (rather obscure ones) and with the fast render times as well as the low-noise results, it’s worth jumping in.

From what I’ve read, though, you may want to stay away from object IDs until that’s nailed down… or if you’re in the mood to do some testing for the devs.

and with object IDs won’t be backward compatible
will crash anything before 2.79 !

but do like some of the new tools

What’s the difference between 2.79 and the 2.78 versions listed on Blender Builder?

Thanks for the info. I’ll try 2.79 tonight. I have no idea what object id’s even are so I doubt it’ll cause me too many problems,

When it comes to release dates, the development process is in Bcon4 now for this week and the next (as per the Sunday Meeting). This means the release should be out in early July (barring a showstopping bug popping up).

Thanks for the links to 2.79

You don’t have to look at the numbers really - you should just look at the dates.
Check when the previous version was released - everything after it will be a development build for the next Blender.
So closer the dev build is to the set date of the next release - the more similar it becomes feature wise to what will you have as the official release. When it is a few weeks apart the only difference is that some bugs maybe are fixed (and sometimes some new ones maybe introduced too :))

Basically the release is a specific moment in time when the developers agree - based on the schedule, features added and the number of remaining critical bugs that the state of the code repository is at right level for an official release. A specific snapshot. The developer builds from the builder download page are just the state of the code on that day which can be depending on the time, close or relatively far away from the next release.

The exceptions are the letter bug releases - like 2.78 had a, b and c. Those are done by so called “cherry picking” - choosing bug fixes and some improvements from the current state of the code repository to address / improve some critical issues of the last official release version.

You can also look at the development schedule here https://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:Doc/Process/Release_Cycle
The schedule tells you something about the process. The closer to the release is - no more big changes or adding new features are allowed. The current state of the development can be checked in the blendercoders irc as it is listed in the room message when joining in. We are currently at Bcon4 - which means bug fixes only.

Hope this helps.

a little more then that!

this is the last release for 2.7 series and it has to be as bug free as it can cause there won’t be anymore release

Then it will be the new 2.8 series totally not backward compatible with the 2.7 series

Right, that’s what it was. Thanks for the reminder.

You and me both. I saw something that explained it, but came away even more confused.

Kind of like when Blender moved from 2.4 to 2.5, I guess. I read somewhere a while ago that 2.4 is still the most solid, bug-free version… not that I’ve ever used it.

It’s just that the release date on the 2.79 build above is earlier than the Blender Builder 2.78 release. However, I don’t believe the 2.78 Builder release had the modal widgets.
