Only 8 Vertex Color slots?

Hi,
I am making a rigged character and for the face I use Vertex Color maps as ‘wrinkle-maps’, but when I got to the 8th vertex color map Blender wouldn’t add another one. I did not receive a error message, but the ‘+’ button just did nothing.

I tried searching for an explanation online, but found nothing. I know I can use texture maps - or even better - the tension map add-on, but I really don’t get why Blender would only support 8 Vertex Color maps!?
Does someone know how to change this? Can an add-on do the trick?

as far as I know it’s an old limitation, agree it’s weird and one would expect it to be lifted by now, but we gotta live with it for the time being. I don’t know of any workarounds.
