conforming a mesh

I think I painted myself in a corner here. I already built a character but am having trouble with eyes and eyelids. My character is and anime character and his eyes are rather oblong and not completely round. I have some eyelids that need to somehow conform to the shape of the eyeball. It seems like there may be some way of doing this such as boolean …not sure. Anyone have suggestions? I hid the rest of the model so I could focus on this so the mesh is still connected to the character. If only I knew of a way to conform the eyelid shape to the eyeball, that would work fine. I am attaching a screenshot of my dilemma.
