Subdivision surface modifier.

I have a simple yet complicated question. Is having a modifier for creating subdivision surfaces typical for blender, or is modifiers for this common in the mass of 3d software? What i want to figure out is not wether other programs has subsurf cause i know they do, but is subsurf usually related to modifiers.

I have asked on several websites that offers support. While the answers i got was very educational they concluded diferently. To learn more, and to come to a more correct conclusion i am asking for help here.

Q: “Is having a modifier for creating subdivision surfaces typical for blender”
Yes, very common

Q: Is modifiers for this common in the mass of 3d software?
Yes.

Thank you for answering, yes to the question is starting to get the overhand across several platforms now so i guess thats correct.

SubD modifier (or Node) is used commonly in Blender, 3dsmax (Turbosmooth, Meshmooth), C4D*, Houdini.

Maya, Modo* and LW*(if I recall correctly), do not have a modifier for that. They have built in functionality to show and render mesh with varying subD level at press of a key. Functionality vs node/modifier is identical.
