Mirrored Object, But Want Different texture on each side

I am modeling an aircraft. I have the model done and am trying to keep vert count down. I modeled on half and used mirror modifier for other half. I’ve textured the rivets, grunge and lettering on the left half and that is mirrored on the right half (pics 1 and 2 below). The issue is the lettering mirrors and shows up backwards on the right mirrored side. I tried clicking “U” under textures in the modifier, but this just scrambles the textures up completely on the right side (pic 3).

Is there any way one can have a different texture on each side of a mirrored object without applying the mesh or adding additional verts?

I’ll have the same issue on the wings.

I did some more research and found this tutorial that shows how to accomplish what I was trying to do.
