Hope Diamond model?

Is there an obj of the Hope Diamond, or a tutorial
to create it?
Did a Google Search and here, but no results.

Hi,
If you can find this issue of Lapidary Journal July 1999 v53 #4, in it has the STEP, ANGLE, and INDEX , for the Pavilion/Crown, for the hope diamond.

From those numbers, I can model that cut.
Unfortunately the earliest issue i have is from Nov 1999.
I’ll look through all issues i have to see if there was a reprint due to error, sometimes that happens.
Checked 3D lapidary, no go there. You could email them, ask if they have one or know where you can get the cut data
Let me know if you find the cut data
Good luck.

Also, might want to contact this guy, see if he can be of any help…

Thanks guys…very helpful info. I will check them all out.

Also, I found this very good tutorial for modeling a brilliant cut diamond, including the nodes to create the
material for the brilliance.

if you find the topo let us know
I might already have made that one but don’t remember

will be following this

thanks

3dcal, are you still looking for this? Good news, I found it in a later edition of Lapidary Journal.

can you give link so we can try to model it
and use this thread as a reference

thanks

Hi RickyBlender,
Sorry, no link, this is a printed magazine, Lapidary Journal from march 2001. Article: Hope Diamond Replica by Scott Sucher, pg 43.
What I do is use the STEP, ANGLE, and INDEX , for the Pavilion/Crown to create the cut in 3D. If you know how to do this, I can put that data up here.
Any suggestions?

I would do it but no data so hard to guess !
I did search many sites and did not really find it too!
is it a top secret shape ?

well can you write up a short tutorial on how to do it
and we can follow it

there was a tut for some bottle or pencil top that might be useful may be !

thanks

Hi
Well I have 2 sources of data. This one here is for a cubic zirconia, not a diamond, thus the angle of cuts are different.

[TABLE=“width: 70%, align: center”]

Angles for R.I. = 1.54
58 facets + 16 facets on girdle = 74

2-fold, mirror-image symmetry
64 index

L/W = 1.087 T/W = 0.689 T/L = 0.634
P/W = 0.462 C/W = 0.179

H/W = (P+C)/W+0.02 = 0.661
P/H = 0.699 C/H = 0.271

Vol./W^3 = 0.279

As far as a “short tutorial”, it’s too complicated of a process for a short tutorial and is probably easier to make the diamond myself and put up somewhere. It’s been a long while making a gem cut, so i may have to relearn some things. Plus I will be doing it in blender instead of modo.
I will have to get the data from the magazine into table form like above, not sure yet if it is for diamond or CZ.
Right now i’m in the process of repairs and cleanup from hurricane irma. Got power, phone/internet back sunday, so behind on some work. So give me a couple of days to catch up, I’ll check back tonight to see if your able to work out this data, if so, great.

i’m not a specialist on GEM cut
so all these data are nice but would need some sketches to show where these values apply

take your time no rush

and good luck with the cleanup
hope it was too bad for you!

thanks

I took this picture several years ago, and it’s not very good sorry. I live near DC so I get to the Smithsonian every now and then. The next time I’m there I’ll take a better one.

I got several cut GEMS done but probably not exact model for this one
I guess it was some special cut

Hi
Yes, not many 3d artists know how to use lapidary data, I know of none. Took me some time to figure it out.

Hunted down an old hard drive that has notes/instructions, remembered that the index numbers(3rd column) has to be converted to angle values. I have also read that the actual table is rounded, not flat. Need to figure that out. There seems to be a couple of other issues(girdle shape) that i have to check on also. This hope diamond was cut in the early 1800s, so im sure there are issues to deal with.

Hopeful that the start of next week, i can get started on this. Have not done one in sometime, this is a good challenge to get back into it again.
Thanks for your patience
