Can't fix this CUDA 6.1 issue for Cycles rendering

Good evening all,
I’m sorry if this is a dead horse, but for the life of me I’ve not been able to find a solution (despite finding reports of this issue from mid-2016). I have a GTX 1080. I’m trying to get my Cycles to render with GPU (part of a Udemy course lesson).

I’ve updated drivers, even downloaded and installed the most recent CUDA development kit. I have Blender 2.77.

I open a test blend file that works perfectly with CPU rendering. But I get the same “CUDA Binary Kernel for this graphics card compute capability (6.1) not found” error that I’ve seen other people report. I search for the fabled “kernel_sm_61” file that I’ve seen mentioned, nothing.

Is there a solution, or am I basically chasing a unicorn here?

Support for the GTX 10xx cards was added with Blender 2.78 and above.
Since you’re using the older 2.77, well, there you have it. Get the latest Blender version from blender.org.

And BTW, you don’t need any CUDA Development Kits. All you need is a recent graphics driver and a Blender version that supports your card.
