GIMP 2.9.6 is out

Just figured community should know

Is this actually talking about the GIMP, I can’t remember the last time it had this much development (and development of useful production features to boot)?

Its potential revival is only good news though, this and Inkscape being well-developed again will finally make FOSS a usable option for 2D image and graphics editing (now we just need to see a major development burst from the LMMS camp).

Both 2.9.2 and 2.9.4 were just as packed with changes.

Download it here. https://download.gimp.org/mirror/pub/gimp/v2.9/

Nice to see some more movement in the land of GIMP. Gonna have to try it out as most of my use of GIMP over the last 5 years has been on either portable systems when needed or for file conversion. Been using PS CS6 for the last 5 years and Paint Shop Pro 9 before that. Still great to see progress! Keep it up!

Funny you mention LMMS. They have their own version of the “colored wire-frames controversy” being the “colored track controversy.” On the plus side you can currently assign colors to beat/bassline tracks, per individual blocks. However you can’t use colors on instrument tracks, or sample tracks, or automation tracks (one, two, three). “ZOMG! User defined colors?” fainting Must be an OSS thing.

Thank you for the great news.

Just switch to Affinity photo, but will check this new release, seems interesting

just do a “git pull” on BABL , GEGL, Png16 ( the current DEV is needed) ,the still older LibMyPaint 1.3 ( the git pull of 2.0 alpha is too new ) and Gimp

set your “config.site” file and build with autotools

been building the source since 2001 , it is rather EASY even on MS Windows

Is there no windows installer download? Anybody getting the “urgent firefox update” with a popup file download(virus/whatever) when going to gimp site. Kinda got me iffy to go to gimp site and download.

There are no official builds for 2.9.6, however there is Partha, who builds 2.9.x for Windows.

Here are download links:

https://www.partha.com/downloads/GIMP-2.9.6-std-64bit.exe
https://www.partha.com/downloads/Gimp-2.9.6-std-64bit-portable.exe

I haven’t tested it yet.

Start from the beginning of this thread and I have put a link-

yeah, I saw your link. The kind of file was throwing me off. How do you use em? I’m use to using these https://download.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.9/windows/ (.exe)

? How do you use them ???
???
this

https://download.gimp.org/mirror/pub/gimp/v2.9/windows/gimp-2.9.6-x64-setup.exe
it is a normal everyday “setup.exe”
– MAN I HATE EVERYTHING BEING CALLED “setup.exe”

or are you referring to the torrent to download the “gimp-2.9.6-x64-setup.exe”

you double click on a “setup.exe”

go back and read my post, what I use is the “setup.exe”. The link bigbad posted gives you , tar.bz2, tar.bz2.md5, and tar.bz2.torrent. I’ve never used any of those kind of files before.

There is a folder called windows…inside it. And please, in the future, read from top to bottom. Even click the links in the replies.

Thank you for the news.

GIMP 2.9.6 is stable release ?

Are track colors really the issue there? I mean LMMS still looks like it’s stuck in the 90’s. Even the application which it’s trying to copy (FLStudio) moved on aesthetically a long time ago.

GIMP 2.9.6 is stable release ?

a big NO !!!

the odd numbering versions are ( and have been for about 20 years ) ALWAYS development testing code!!!

gimp 2.8 is the STABLE

Been using 2.9+ exclusively since end of 2015  2.9.2-3… or so… basically more than a year already, when 16+ bpc support was introduced. Does fine and well.

You’ll also be presented with this:

Note:
on Windows 7 using portable version, if you get this error when starting GIMP:

The procedure entry point g_getenv could not be located in the dynamic link library libglib-2.0-0.dll

add underscore prefix to ‘libglib-2.0-0.dll’ in plugins folder to get: “…Gimp-2.9.6-std\portable\plug-ins<b>_libglib-2.0-0.dll”

Ok. Thanks !
