Lattice for Cartoon Eyes

I am trying to put a lattice around an oblong eye in order to force the shape to stay as is while rotating the eye. I am not happy with the loosness of the lattice around the eye. Making the fit tighter only changes the shape. Os there any way to make a lattice have a tight fit around an object?

not sure what your trouble is here… you might have to post a file for us to look at…

but a few questions…

do you have your eye bone parented directly with the eye ball?
that is … is the eye a child of the eye bone… ?
or do you have the eyebone as a deformer to the eye object?

I would want both the eye object and the eye lattice placed as children to the eye bone…

also here is a few tutorials you might want to watch…

Note that some of these tutorials use the Lattice Modifier and some of them cover the Mesh Deform modifier… which maybe what your wanting to use instead…

CG Cookie has a course that covers cartoon eyes in detail.

As for your question, you have to adjust the size of lattices in Object mode. But, that may not be enough for what you want. I do not like lattices because the deformed mesh is not deformed nearly as much as the lattice must be deformed. Mesh deform is much tighter. You need a “dynamic” bind for it to work with a rotating eye. I have not watched that CG Cookie tutorial, so I do not know if it uses Mesh Deform nor if it could work with Mesh Deform.
