Correctly applying displacement maps to spheres

Hi All,

First of all, many thanks to the kind users on this forum, and I hope you’ll have patience with me as I’m a very casual Blender user!

I’ve searched the forum and cannot seem to find a satisfactory answer to my problem.

I am trying to model the moon, after which I will be 3D printing it. However I cannot get the displace modifier to work well, always resulting in pinched geometry at the poles as per the attached picture.

I primarily followed this tutorial and a few others on YouTube, but it always comes back to the same thing…pinched north an south poles…

UV unwrapping and sticking a texture on it seems to be ok, its just the displacement map that doesn’t cooperate. Any ideas, oh Blender guru’s?

first WHAT height data are you using ?

– this dose make a difference
i have worked with the pre Apollo data and Clementine’s data
and now the Lunar reconnaissance Orbiter stereo and LOLA height data

there is also a plugin for importing the PDS ( planetary Data System ) height map
– a bit old but dose work in the current blender

be aware that using a LARGE image will make a HUGE mesh

or

use a ico mesh ( 7 divisions)
UV map to a sphere
import the 16 bit data as a displacement mod on the mesh

John mentioned the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter images, here’s one below that I have used, its high resolution so you will probably want to reduce it. Although the description indicates cylindrical projection, the format appears to be equirectangular and maps to a sphere without distortion using spherical mapping.
