Challenge #748 Voting CLOSED

This week’s theme:

fractals

After 2 days of voting, a winner is declared: The voting will close on Wednesday.
The winner picks the theme for next week.

[ If the winner doesn’t supply a theme before Thursday 22:30 GMT, the organizer will select the theme. In this case, the winner’s theme will be used the next time we are lacking a theme on Thursday 22:30 GMT. ]

Having selected the theme, the winner will not be eligible to enter that week. They may however still submit an image, but it won’t be included in the voting.

My competing vote goes to Arethyu. It looks realistic and i love realistic renders.
And my Non-competing vote goes to Helge maybe because i like those animals or the redner is so great. One of there, or both

I should write something more but my brain is like my PC this week.

That wasn’t an entry, i actually completely forgot about this competition.:o

double post, please delete/ignore.

Thanks skadoosh! Such fascinating animals. Last weekend, we saw one of these in a pet shop. (Although, I guess it would have liked a rain forest much better.)

@GrimZA: Unfortunately, I can’t change the voting after it started. However, I can remove the image, if you’d like me to do that.
(And who knows? Maybe you still attract some votes.)

Many nice entries this week! My vote is going to ‘fractal flowers’ made by fdo. I loved the composition but also the clean procedural .blend responsible for the entry.

Really nice entries indeed. I voted for RayVelcoro: apart from being a great render there’s just some atmosphere I really like about it.

(btw if someone has some critique… :eyebrowlift:)

Nah, you can leave it.

Ah, I really thought DM9 was going to wipe the floor with everyone, but it looks like good ol Purbo is in the lead. No offense to Purbo, his entry is very good, but I just figured DM9 would have won all the votes. Well, it’s still early, things could change.

@Helge, I really like your entry, looking at it more it’s very interesting. Can you elaborate a bit on how you did this? I would like to use a similar effect to create objects out of smaller objects. Did you use some kind of plugin, addon, or rigid technique to accomplish that? Or did you actually reconstruct the lizard out of the tinier ones by hand? Did you have a full model of the lizard and then just start placing the smaller ones around until it looked right?

DM9’s entry is good but i think the colors are too much on the dark side.

Thanks Skadoosh, I was inspired by the works of Jeremie Brunet, a French fractal artist.

You are right. I just glued deformed chameleon copies onto one big base object in the middle, by hand. Not much magic to be found around this one.

Thx 4 the kind words Miatpi!

@Helge, thanks for posting that, it helps me understand what is going on there. There are actually a lot more copies than I had originally noticed. One more question for you on that, how did you go about deforming the lizard? Did you meticulously rig the model so you could properly deform it, or did you simply do it with proportional editing?

@Miatpi you asked for some critiques, so here ya go  First off, I think your entry is pretty good, your composition, lighting and modeling are all good. Good angle, nice and bright, I also love that blur effect you have done on the time hands, how did you do that by the way? Very cool.

Now for the critiques: for one, I think you already realize this, but it doesn’t really fit the theme. With that said, there are a few things I would like to note. For one, the effect you did for the fractal time shooting out the clock seems a bit out of place. The effect is also too similar in color to the clock, so at a quick glance the whole thing kind of blurs together. Specifically here on the challenge try and remember that your image is in a long list and typically people are going to just quickly scroll through the list looking fo anything that stands out. So if your image is too harmonious in color it may stand out less. I think if you were to have made those blocks have more contrast with the clock it would have helped make the image stand out. Same with the background, it also has that same kind of color/brightness of the clock. Also, you should have added some electric surges to the main clock hand, or something like that effect you did on the guitar entry where the robot guy had the electricity running all around him. I feel like that would have been appropratie for the clock hand here, and then even possibles uinfusing that with those fractal blocks.

Anyways, I just thought I would mention a couple of those things, I think in total though it’s excellent. CYa

@robproctor83: Man, that’s the second time you attribute MY robot to somebody else (the first time was here)! But I must say that I’m honoured to be remembered 5 weeks and more than one hundred entries afterwards

Just so that you don’t make the same mistake again, I’ve updated my avatar

(Ok, to be fair, Miatpi and Millani do look similar…)

Ah lol oooops dang I was wondering too if that was right, but I was like nah that was him… Agh… Well, now that I see it’s your avatar I should have a better shot at getting it right… =)

Edit… Dang how did I confuse you with david… that is embarrassing… the names aren’t even close!

FYI, that image did leave a lasting memory

You’re welcome.
I actually started to rig the original chameleon. I had all bones placed and set up but getting all the weights right was taking way too much time and the tail wasn’t working all that well. So, in the end, I scrapped the rig and went with proportional editing, which worked like a charm. However, if I was to do this again - this time with a broader time frame and better quality / more details in mind, I would definitely go the rigging way again.

I also voted for Purbosky. It is a really nice entry, but also, and I think why it is getting many votes, is the classic fractal it portrays. It is the same fractal I was working on before I admitted to myself that I didn’t want to make a fractal.

Personally I have never cared much for fractal art. They look cool for the first few images, but then it’s like what’s the purpose, where’s the story, or the emotion, the human element if you will. Besides, I think many fractals require a serious stretch of the imagination to see the repetitive form in them.

Personal thoughts aside I think there were some absolutely amazing entries this week.

Personal favorites are

RayVelcoro
DM9
Didierv
Millani
fdo
DERBENDER
caz747 (really liked the colors in this)
miatpi
Perbosky
Helge
RobertT

All awesome.

I couldn’t quite get my entry done in time, I suppose it isn’t wise to decide to enter at literally the last second! What time does the weekend challenge end each week? or does it vary? Isn’t it supposed to end at 8pm on Monday? I missed the deadline by literally 40 mins or so!
But here is what my entry would have been had I gotten it in…
Comments or advice welcome.
