Challenge #754 Voting CLOSED

This week’s theme:

In the Mirror

After 2 days of voting, a winner is declared: The voting will close on Wednesday.
The winner picks the theme for next week.

[ If the winner doesn’t supply a theme before Thursday 22:30 GMT, the organizer will select the theme. In this case, the winner’s theme will be used the next time we are lacking a theme on Thursday 22:30 GMT. ]

Having selected the theme, the winner will not be eligible to enter that week. They may however still submit an image, but it won’t be included in the voting.

Im glad I made it into the final list. I barely made the deadline!
My vote went to you Millani! Well done!

Also DERBENDER did you make that model yourself? If so well done!

Hey putr corps I liked yours a lot, why is it open if you don’t mind me asking?

Olg I like your last render best, with the mix of metals, very nice.

RobertT that’s maybe my fav image of yours I’ve seen, very nice use of 3d, the model is super well done.

Enthymeme when I first seen your image I thought it looked awesome but kind of strange, I thought that was the top of a really high buildings way up in the clouds with a plane flying straight up. However once I realized what the scene actually was I seen it for all it’s greatness. Awesome render, love the architectural stuff.

I felt like there wasn’t that many submissions this week, but looking now there are quite a few.

Awesome entries like always everyone, and best wishes on the votes. Keep up the awesome work.

No,no, all credits go to the great addon of Manuel, check it out if you haven´t already.
In your image I like the grass and the reflections of the clouds a lot.
Great entries everyone.

Had a blast making this entry. I kinda rushed it though.
Had a clear image in my mind beforehand, which helps a lot, and it took me like 1-2 hours making it, including installing two addons(I only copy the .py files to the scripts folder of Blender, that´s the beauty of Blender,ManuelBastioniLab 1.6 and Maxime´s Spider webs addon, both worth checking) and testing them too.

My vote also goes to Millani, great entry and also a fun game.
Cheers everybody

Took me a lot to decide, but my vote goes to putr corps . Really love the Sci-Fi atmosphere

My vote went to putr corps too. 100+ nodes in materials : O will you do some tutorials?

@Millani, you’ve done great job telling the story

@usernew did you post your reference photo? I love it!

@RobertT astonishing model!

Hello everyone, thank you all for your words.

@ robproctor83: why I keep it open I mention it in the post, along with other interesting information, Copy and paste: I think I’ll keep it open, because the model of the man and the fire hydrant are downloaded of blend-swap a long time ago, I regret not remembering their authors. The rig, materials and the pose, I made them this weekend. By the way, I love your render, the composition, along with that of @Enthymeme, is the best of this week for me, why did not you participate?

@FreeFly: Thanks, if I got into 3d years ago, it was thanks to my love for the sci-fi

@skadoosh: mmh, my first language is not English and my pronunciation is quite bad, but I had already thought about it more than once, I have to find a solution to that topic because I hate tutorials without a voice. A thread can be a good solution.

sorry my english

Great entries everyone! It makes it so difficult to vote and that’s awesome. I have been wanting to participate for weeks now but real life has been getting in the way. However, this weeks theme I found most compelling and so now I will submit my non competing entry that is still in my head:

The piece is called: Leaving Home
It is a closeup shot of a side mirror on a car from the passengers perspective. Reflected in the mirror is a house with someone standing outside it waving goodbye. The house and person have the sunrise behind them so they are in shadows. Clearly visible on the bottom of the mirror are the words we all know “Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear”.
One day, I will make that image.

Purbosky: I love warm scenes. This is a good scene and the building in the center catches my attention. The title suggest those are meteorites reflection we see on the building. I feel the matte-type material of the building could use better material. Ha! Comet Corp. Looks like something heading home

DERBENDER: The model looks great to me! Overall, very god.

didierv: I love those circular rings of light. I just noticed those eyes like of a cat. I really like this. At first I thought that was a squid up and until I saw those nails.

RayVelcoro: The main body material feels like plastic. It should have been metal, right? The world reflection is nice but it is repeating. Those would be my only critique. I like the stars and the idea and the reflection.

fdo: Great! But in the subsequent mirrors, the colors start repeating. Would have been great to see even more color variations. I like the reflected wall texture.

R-dva: Your render reminds me of this: https://www.inwin-style.com/en/gaming-chassis/805i

Good idea. But the black area surrounding the mirror looks odd. I mean, think of this mirror hanging on a wall with nothing in it to see?

Scepter1987: This scene looks like it cam from a fantasy land. A portal to universe. Good work!

Millani: So much is going on in this scene. The Past! Love. Marriage. Childhood. Old Age. Addiction. Emptiness. Amazing! My vote went for this! How did you make this? And what inspired you?

FlyingBanana: Obsidians are usually dark. I love those details around the obsidian. The scale of the volcano texture should

Munno101: The granite material is really nice. I don’t have much to critique except for the repeating texture on the boxes. Very good work on the materials and the light sufficient for this type of scene.

fcharr: Your model is nice. But why the mirror is hanging in mid-air? I like the chocolaty background.

Ansaar13: You could have used subdivision surface on the frame of the specs. And more interesting light with some depth could have made this scene amazing! TBH, I like the black and white butterfly more than the colored.

joshwinkler3d: What happened to your previous scene? That was way better than this. This scene looks too muddy. And sharks don’t like muddy waters.

mirek_snd:

That’s cool! I would personally get rid of the blender logo and the web-like cracks to make it more realistic. And the subtle visibility if the face of the ghosts is interesting.

caz747: Some textures looks odd. But I don’t want to look at this scene for long. The lady in the mirror scares me. Yeah, that beautiful lady is beautiful but scary at the same moment. Very good work.

beau11: Oh! Another. The grass looks really good. Why change the scene? I mean, the clouds in the mirror is really good and effect. But the previous entry you gave was very good if I compare it with this one. https://blenderartists.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=507127&d=1512223731

In this scene, the blob-like thing is mysterious and the lighting is perfect.

david.speer: what is this? It looks like that instrument in music. The grass is also good here and also green. The trees suggest otherwise. You went heavy with the branches. Too many. Otherwise, this is a good scene with overcast light and an air mystery.

putr corps: I believe you ran out of time cz some materials look too new here compared to the rest of the scene. For example, the windowsill look too clean. Same goes for the hydrant. And the material for the bolts on it? Another thing is the carpet like thing on the ground. Otherwise, the story and lighting is perfect. Color combination is really good. I love this!

OLG: Baroque modeling is not easy. You did a pretty fine job with that. Out of the three, I like the third one the most.

DM9: The disc is lovely. Lighting is really good, but the character seems weird, especially the lips.

RobertT: This is amazing! The details are crazy! Hats off to ya, sir!

3dmad: This is another amazing entry. Everything is nice except for the buildings on the right and the broken shards flying.

Helge: I am wondering how you fit the T-rex in the bathroom. And I know what the T-rex is thinking: how is he gonna brush his teeth with those tiny hands? To me, this is sad, not scary

FuzzyPeachApple: This has the southpark style. Grease pencil? This is what a typical boy thinks when he is in front of a mirror, I guess.

robproctor83: This is nice. The glass looks like frosted. The imperfections on th projectile is good. But what is this? A bullet? It cannot be a bullet, I think. Subtle, but nice bokeh effect.

Enthymeme: This is really good. But the orange building looks so fake compared to the rest of the scene.

Thanks! I wish It ended up more like I initially thought.

Hey thanks for the comments. I went this route since I think it would be better practice for me to try and add in something that I modeled! The one I had before was supposed to be the bean in Chicago. I decided to go for a more challenging route to improve my overall skills. That’s what these contests are for, isn’t it?

@beau11, DERBENDER, skadoosh: Thanks!

Thanks for the comments. The shards were made using the knife tool. I then assigned an object index to each of them, which was used later in the compositor to assign each shard a different reflection. I modelled each reflection as a separate blender scene. It was a bit of a hassle positioning each one in front of the mirror, and having to render 5 instead of just 1 scene took some time

As stated in the entry post, the inspiration was a quote from a video game called Max Payne. I’ll repeat the quote here:

“The past is a puzzle, like a broken mirror. As you piece it together, you cut yourself, your image keeps shifting.
And you change with it.
It could destroy you, drive you mad.
It could set you free.”

I had in mind an rare advanced technology artifact, purpose lost and forgotten. The new purpose to be on display as a statue in another wise natural setting. Yes I have in mind to work on trees in the future. For this week, i tackled many things for the first time, grass, sky, sculpting and still trying to become “ok” in procedural materials. So much to learn, so much trial and error

caz747: Some textures looks odd. But I don’t want to look at this scene for long. The lady in the mirror scares me. Yeah, that beautiful lady is beautiful but scary at the same moment. Very good work.

Thanks, usernew, for the comments, they’re always appreciated.

Yes, Medusa is quite beautiful, and it’s hard not to stare at her, but not for too long, no not that, lest it all end in a stony slience.

@usernew Thank you for the critique, all in all I am not really too happy with the scene. I couldn’t get the obsidian to actually look black and still be reflective. Either I could get it to look black but I would have to darken the scene and whenever I turned up the lighting to brighten the scene it would take on almost a metallic look. Also had problems trying to get a glow to the lava from the one volcano lava. So this challenge showed me a lot of what I have to learn and improve on. Again thank you for the critique it is always welcomed from me. And the obsidian rock was just a circle extruded back, subdivided, then sculpted the edges without smoothing to have the jagged edges.

Usernew thanks for the comments, very nice of you.

Millani grats on all the votes, have you won a challenge yet, or will this be your first?

Hey there user

Thanks, this week’s mission was to model a decent looking bust. To be honest, it’s a bit of a mess, looks good if you don’t turn it on its side :stuck_out_tongue: As for the floating mirror… It’s magical! What magic does it possess, you might ask? The ability to be suspended too far from any wall to be able to cast a shadow, I say.

I don’t mean to be disagreeable, but I have a feeling that the meaning of pure tends to vary quite a bit from person to person…

I dedicate this to both Helge’s and Millani’s entries: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37GrbCUvZEM

@usernew Thanks for feedback, Millani had the same issues but I was asleep so I couldn’t change anything. I don’t think it would have changed the voting situation much though.

I do agree though, it was too muddy which wasn’t my intention, I was trying to limit the view distance but couldn’t push it into the background enough. I wanted the foreground clear like in the original render. Maybe if I had more time but I learnt things from this so that’s ok.

To make it a little easier to find and check out the original entry thread posts, I started to add a link to each of those in the voting thread starting post, some weeks ago. I can’t do it if I hit the 10.000 character limit - but it works out most of the time.

Thanks for taking the time (again!).
And, there is a simple answer to the first question: Even a T-Rex doesn’t need that much space if he doesn’t consist of more than just a head.

Of course, this makes the second question even sadder.

That seems to be true. But the rules are quite vague on this matter, so being honest regarding the tools and assets used is probably the best we can do. That is another reason why I started to add the entry post links to the images. Maybe it can help voters to decide.

Nice, I haven’t head that one for many years. And if fits SonnySee’s virtual entry, as well.
