You just did not follow necessary steps to make it work.

  1. A subdivision surface modifier is needed to have adaptive tesselation.
  2. You need to smooth shading of object.
  3. Cycles UI must be set to Experimental to display displacement settings in material tab.
  4. You have to set Subdivision rate at a pertinent value according map to details.
