Challenge #763 Voting CLOSED

This week’s theme:

Awake

After 2 days of voting, a winner is declared: The voting will close on Wednesday.
The winner picks the theme for next week.

[ If the winner doesn’t supply a theme before Thursday 22:30 GMT, the organizer will select the theme. In this case, the winner’s theme will be used the next time we are lacking a theme on Thursday 22:30 GMT. ]

Having selected the theme, the winner will not be eligible to enter that week. They may however still submit an image, but it won’t be included in the voting.

DanielJH got my vote. You really achieved the morning feeling I think.

For me, photox got my vote. The coffee looked very realistic.

My vote went to Photox too.Realistic render and high speed modelling.

My vote goes to str11, stunning piece of artwork.

Voted for str11.

If anyone’s interested, here’s my would-be entry (if I were finished about an hour earlier…):

Good Entries.
CG-Predator got my vote. Clean and Simple

@Miatpi I like your ‘would be entry’. A little work and it could be a very intriguing image.

Gotta go with Photox as well, very nice details.

Man these all look amazing a lot of you use high render samples. Wish I could do that CPU + time it would take to render = Long time, use my computer to much for that haha.

I sincerely apologise if I offend anyone with my question, I am not around that often :
What is the purpose of the challenge theme if half of the people’s entries are not related to it what so ever - in my opinion.

“Coffee evolution” ?“F1 Coffee” ??? “Coffee cups…Caffeine Pills ??? Did people lose their imagination?
The theme is " AWAKE” not " WHAT WAKES ME UP" .
To make a restaurant quality coffee like that will take me an hour…lol…especially in the morning, by the time I am done making it - I am not only AWAKE ,but also done watching my son’s cartoons…all of them.
Don’t get me wrong…Photox, Str11 - beautiful piece of work. 5 stars from me. Is it challenge related? Don’t think so.
I was tempted to enter the Weekend challenge a few times, but is it really a challenge if everything goes - as long as your Rendering LOOKS better??
Once again - I did not mean to offend anybody.

@INTERSTELLAR that is the main part of the “Themes” to the challenge. If it were something like “Cup” then everyone would have the same render, a cup. Rather boring and doesn’t leave anything up to the artists interpretation or freedom to express their mindset on the theme. Coffee is considered something to wake you up which in turn is to awaken. Also yes sometimes the theme gets stretched by the artists quite a bit but in the end it is just a fun challenge to test and hone your skills. So for me it is more pleasing seeing so many various entries into the challenge that relate to the theme but not all the same. If it were a challenge to model something specific then that would be something like an object challenge where there would be something given and everyone had to model the same thing and whoever did it best wins. But in the end it is just all about fun and something to break the monotony of other projects others might have going on. And no offense taken, this has been mentioned before about the challenges.

When I decided to take Awake as the new challenge theme I wanted to push the imagination of the competitors a bit towards spirituality. I now see, that I had to describe it more precisely  Like INTERSTELLAR mentioned it is interesting to see that many of you took the first impulse that comes into your mind like coffee, caffein and morning. This isn’t bad at all just different from my expectations. Because of all what I just mentioned and my intention to see some spirituality I went for Millanis entry. I like the robot model and his idea behind it.Something like this is what I expected :). I guess the composition and lighting could be improved but that’s why we are here, aren’t we? Great entries this challenge! Especiallly Photox.

@INTERSTELLAR People become awake after drinking coffee, so I think coffee is very related to the theme. I particularly think it is more fun if people try to interpret the theme in unexpected ways. In my opinion, the majority of entries are fairly close to the theme (we had mostly castles in the castle week, robots in the robots week, cubes in the cube week, and so on).

It’s the same as modelling a hosepipe for a Theme " SWIMMING" ,because that’s what I use to fill up the pool.

@FlyingBanana - I hear what you are saying and I respect your comment, but even a Theme " CUP" can bring forth Ideas in my head ,which can still be related to that theme , but not an actual CUP. And it’s not a Factory that makes them.

Anyway - this is a free Contest , I understand that.

Thank you for your responds

INTERSTELLAR, with all your freewheeling critique of the theme interpretation, I’ll assume that you have an inspired and original concept for a piece, which you designed, modeled, textured, lit and composited – all in a day or so. If it’s so easy, go ahead, post an image right here. Everyone else did.

Don’t forget: it’s easy to criticize, but difficult to create.

The beauty of these challenges is that it’s totally up to the artist on how they want to interpret the theme given to them. Coffee is completely viable as longs thats what the artists thinks is viable. I think it’s more thought provoking the closer they get to the line on whats ‘awake’ and whats completely abstract.

And no I don’t think that the artists in this challenge have lost their imagination as you have pointed out. In fact, i think quite the opposite. They are becoming more and more talented every week creating beautiful artistic images that represent an idea and provoke the mind into delving deep into what the image is supposed to truly represent. Their imagination is far from lost and I think its beautiful that these challenges allow them to express their imagination while at the same time allowing them to increase their skills and artistic abilities.

There seems to be quite a bit of coffee entries in this challenge, and although coffee is generally associated with awake, some entries deviate, or largely ignore the topic. I agree with the disappointment expressed by some. As for the creative aspect: Allot of people unconsciously changed the topic from Awake to Coffee. I voted for PixelFX, Photox’s fancy coffee cups are awesome, but by no stretch of my imagination can I conjure anything awake from the image, unless of course you can associate sugar crash with awake. I look at the voting result and think maybe our voters don’t fully understand these challenges.

@Miatpi - great entry to bad you didnt make it in time.

Excellent entries, everyone!

As always, it’s difficult to get it down to one choice.

My vote went to Photox for his masterful execution, both technically and artistically, while also, to me, making a bit of an interesting and on-topic (if not “meta”) commentary on coffee:

the more obvious aspect of coffee being a popular symbol for physical awakening (e.g. “wake up and smell the coffee”) and, beyond that, sort of a “hey, wake up, and look what’s happening/happened to – or what has become of – coffee.”

The “evolution,” in that sense, then, for me, takes on almost a sarcastic/subversive quality that is appreciable as well.

As for my entry, it was influenced partly by one of Brancusi’s famous sculptures (“La Muse Endormie” - The Sleeping Muse), which, first on its side (sleeping), gradually (through successive physical geometric rotations/transformations in my image) symbolizes the awakening.

The “woke” part being a more modern reference (to be “actively aware of systemic injustices and prejudices, especially those related to civil and human rights,” as it is defined, for example, at Dictionary.com: http://www.dictionary.com/browse/woke?s=t ).

Eventually the head gives way to become an (inner?) eye and then a mouth forms, and it does speak, as it now must:

The “spoke” part being what one does once one is societally awakened: you speak out against wrongs while adding a positive voice to the ever-stronger chorus of those who support and collectively promote what is good.

As for interpretations in general, I support what any participant personally determines is worthy of posting.

Diversity is good, and there is always room enough for everyone and any style =)

To enjoy, to learn, and to keep creating and sharing with our community and the world is what keeps this challenge vital, interesting, and fun.
