Virtual carving

Hello,

Does anyone know a possibility to virtual carve eg low-reliefs? can it be done with blender, and so where to get good free tutorials of it.

Kind regards,

Rob

Hi RobMitch,

it’s possible in sculpt mode. I do the following:

  • add a plane, go into edit mode (Tab) and subdivide it a couple of times
  • press 7 (top view) and 5 (isometric/no perspective)
  • go into sculpt mode and in the left panel, turn on dynamic topology (set it to something like 4 - the lower you go the more triangles it will generate, so you’ll need a good cpu)
  • turn off symmetry (it’s on for the X-axis by default)
  • you can select brushes at the top of the panel --> press F to adjust size, Shift-F to adjust strength, click to sculpt (add), Ctrl+click to subtract

This is a very ‘in a nutshell’ tutorial, you should check the manual for more in depth information.
I’ve been sculpting some reliefs lately (for cnc engraving) and I’m going to do some tests soon, using height maps generated from the sculpt. Check the inserted images; the portret represents how it’s viewed in Blender (with a matcap) and the other one is a height map (with some watermarks sorry :p), ready for engraving.
If you need some more information, just pm me.
By the way, I see you’re from Belgium too

Regards,
Zsolt
