Challenge #769 Voting CLOSED

This week’s theme:

Helmet

After 2 days of voting, a winner is declared: The voting will close on Wednesday.
The winner picks the theme for next week.

[ If the winner doesn’t supply a theme before Thursday 22:30 GMT, the organizer will select the theme. In this case, the winner’s theme will be used the next time we are lacking a theme on Thursday 22:30 GMT. ]

Having selected the theme, the winner will not be eligible to enter that week. They may however still submit an image, but it won’t be included in the voting.

[post=3294314]NO HELMET FOR CURIOSITY (AT THE PORTAL’S THRESHOLD)[/post]
    http://artofinterpretation.com/images2018/wc769-NoHelmetForCuriosity-AtThePortalsTheshold-byrjt2018.jpg

I just realized that Helge is competing again this time, yay! Would be fun to watch the voting race! :eyebrowlift:

Great entries everyone ! And Helge joined in the challenge this week, awesome.

We have been talking about improving the image of / putting a little more focus on the ‘open’ category. Having created an open entry, this seemed like a good opportunity to do just that.

If I am to take my progress seriously, I should probably start going open with my entries.

@fcharr my thoughts are that a lot of stuff can be created and made for the “Pure” designation, but as far as doing work outside of the contest most all of what you see of others work in the forum would be classified as “Open” being that most of others are using textures, add-ons and such that allow the creation to render process go much quicker than a 4 day challenge (sometimes). I think it is good having the two designations (pure, open) as there is some who can create a true pure great looking render in a short amount of time as they have done it for a while. Whereas in my case I am rather new and I do prefer to use textures and such that were created outside of blender however I do try to keep my entries as close to pure as I can but I try to be fair about my entries and think to myself how much of my scene was actually created externally be it textures or background images/hdr. But others like RobertT for example is turning out some awesome works and all without relying on outside of blender help.

This is just a fun thing to help keep interest in modeling and the brain juices flowing for me. But I would say that if I were to try to get serious about what I make in Blender I would have add-ons and use tools not just in Blender to help create projects quickly, efficiently, and of quality too. Ok I have rambled on enough and hope I haven’t offended anyone.

#confused
I had a pretty (photo)realistic dream that we have a new theme already. Too bad i dont know what it was anymore.

didierv got my vote this time, i like the models and how they evolve through the ages.
If it wasn’t non-competitiv RoberT could have get it aswell.

Thanks for the votes

I chose Millani. Not as close to the theme as others, but excellent composition and story

Hey!

Nice entries!

I vote for Sci-fi-Guy

Nice retro-futurist design (and original)
Cool shaders

Thank you! I think I have a somewhat different approach to the theme than most people. There is so much more to a word than its dictionary definition, and I think that the picture of a helmet on a plane does not transmit the same emotions that the word helmet does.

A kid wearing a cooking pot on his head is one of the first things that came to my mind when I thought about the theme, so at least in my interpretation, it was pretty close to the theme :). But of course, each person interprets the theme in their own way.

I also voted for Millani, the piece was much different from the other entries and just kind of captured a fun feeling.

High quality entries all! I started 3 different concepts but none of them bore any fruit.

@Photox I was wondering where your entry was. Kind of expected something similar to your ’ nightmare theme ’ with the fuzzy monster wearing an anti nightmare helmet or something.

That’s spooky man, I thought about doing that!

I voted for the samurai helmet, good job y’all.

U did some great improvements, FlyingBanana, u got my vote for that! Also liked the entries of Helge, darkphoenix & Sci-fi-Guy to name a few. Great modelling guys!

@RayVelcoro thanks for the vote. I didn’t get around to texture painting the bottle holder I came down with a 24 hour flu bug and wasn’t sure I would get any more done before the deadline.

Pretty cool seeing some sculpting being done. Great entries everyone. It’s a close race this week.

@Photox Thanks! Like FlyingBanana, the theme also reminded me of your ‘nightmare’ entry

Some comments:

RayVelcoro: This reminds me of your drone from two weeks ago. I liked the material and the distribution of smooth vs. highly detailed regions. I’m just not sure how one puts this on the head

darkphoenix: The slayer became the slayed it seems. I really liked how you subtly hinted on the cause of death by breaking part of the helmet and adding blood stains. The model and textures are pretty cool. One thing that bothers me is the lighting though. It doesn’t seem to fit the foggy background.

didierv: Nice collection of helmets. Interesting to see different historical times represented by variations of the same object. The Templar helmet is my favourite of the four.

fcharr: A very iconic helmet. I liked the “hair” on top of it (but I thought it was always red).

Hondo: Funny how you used the red of the watermelon to represent blood. You also captured the sense of action pretty well. I just ask myself how can a bullet slice a watermelon in three like that

alf0: Interesting colours, looking like some desaturated old photo or something like that. The silhouette of the person was a nice touch.

PyBlend: You can never have enough gadgets in a cap! I wonder how useful it is to have a compass on top of your head, where you can’t see it…

david.speer: Cool how you focused on the reflections, kind of showing what the astronaut would be seeing (if there were an astronaut inside, that is). I just think that the lighting is drawing the attention always from the helmet rather than towards it.

joshwikler3d: For some reason, I imagine the octopus saying something like “Hello there, darling”, and the scuba diver going all “Eww!”. Anyway, funny picture! I particularly liked the eyes.

dustsounds: Very cool details, you manage to transmit the fearful appearance of those masks pretty well. The teeth are particularly cool.

caz747: Hehe, funny title. I always found those predator masks to be really cool, and I think you made a good job modelling this one. I just think the mouth part is too flat.

Iridesium: Pretty cool, in both senses of the word ;). I liked those tentacle things on the back. I’m just confused about how you see when wearing one of those things.

str11: Awesome! I really liked the lighting and how you subtly used a bit of orange colour. The details are very cool, and I can see facial features like eyes and mouth even though the robot does not have any of those things. What is a CTAC, by the way?

beau11: Nice use of silhouettes. I just think the light outside is too gray, I would expect something more yellowish, specially because of the sand.

Sci-fi-guy: I can’t put my finger on why, but this really looks like something from the 50s or 70s (I’m not old enough to tell the difference). Very interesting idea, and it looks very photo-realistic too. The radio antenna was pretty funny

Helge: You really livened up the scene by adding colour! The colours in the background are very pretty and make the image feel even more cheerful. I liked how the little creature inside the egg is looking at its daddy. Did your daughter convince to go competing this time?

FlyingBanana: I really liked the details of the bench, with dirt and stuff like that. The lighting really feels like a stadium at night. I just think it would make more sense if the reflections on the helmets looked more like those lamps used at stadiums.

Piet: Funny how the helmet has a hole for Suzanne’s ears, and also how it is longer in order to cover her mouth.

OLG: Nice statue, it conveys a tribal feeling pretty well. Also cool how you mixed hight-tech with primitive lances. I just suppose that the toothpick cloak must be a bit uncomfortable to wear  (I know it’s not made of toothpicks, but it looks like).

purbosky: Nice crown, it looks like the kind of thing from Legend of Zelda or some other Japanese game. I particularly liked the “blades”. Also good realization from 2d to 3d

RobertT: Interesting how it looks like the helmet and the suit of the astronaut are made of with one long “string”. I also liked how there seems to be some bright blue thing close to the astronauts head, yet I can’t properly see what it is. Now I’m curious to know what it is! (Maybe it’s the portal’s threshold?).

Managed to make it a few minutes before the voting ended

Thanks Millani! Actually, my wife convinced me. (Inverting the tin-foil-hat concept from last weeks entry was her idea.)

And… the winner of Weekend Challenge 769 with 19.61% of the votes is… dustsounds!

Samurai Helmet

@Millani Thanks I am still trying to figure out good lighting and I had a feeling that I made the helmets a little too glossy and I would have to agree with you that I should have brought the glossiness down a bit more on them. I was going to do that and I didn’t get to texturing the water bottle carrier either due to a 24 hour flu bug that struck me rather suddenly. I am just glad the night stadium feel did still come across. If I had time I would have gone out and shot a football field 360 environment map to use for reflections to make it a little more realistic but alas the human body tends to do what it does and out of my control.
