Solidify makes other side of faces always selected. Help?

I used solidify and now want to extrude on top of my recently beveled area along the upper rim of this pagoda structure. But…

if I even choose a single face it also wraps my selection around to underneath. Choosing the foremost face there seems to choose the two sides that are at the front and underneath it. So any selections I make at top also are selecting the faces directly beneath for some reason.

Extruding creates the mess above. This following pic from a tutorial is the result that I want.

I’ve tried my best googling this but can’t find anyone that’s had the same issue. The tutorial uses 3DSMax, but I’ve followed along with Blender fine until I mocked the guy’s use of a Shell with Blender’s solidify option.

Any help appreciated.
