help with numbers in the material nodes...

When manipulating vectors in the material nodes compositor what do the numbers equate to? I’m doing a UV scroll using object color and one test i did today found that a value of 2.5 would move the image 100%, all the way back to the start. Another test required 1.0
Are they fixed or related to the xy size of the image? if so which image?
