Is there a way to have image node load multiple textures and randomly assign them to object elements/geometry islands. Or at least different objects?

Not with one texture node. At least to my knowledge. Check this tut by Gleb Alexandrov ( from 3:31) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liNGmdXsfbs and see if it can help you.
