How do i properly apply subdivision surface modifier to cylinder(more details inside)

how do apply subserf modifier to this cylinder with a whole in it, without it turning to a circle

i wanted it to look like it had more faces and look smoother while still remain being a cylinder.
but, it turned to this image below.


Use creasing, bonus points for auto-smooth + sharp edges and solidify modifier.

which method did you use? i specially like the last one on the right

They’re the same. Control cage, subdivided control cage, subdivision result, and without wires.

Have a look in my sig, Lots of talk about the techniques needed and the theory behind it. For LightWave. But it applies to Blender as well. Just different tools - mostly.
