Ladder Animation Advise

I am looking for some advise on how to approach an animation of a character descending down a ladder. As you can see the ladder is accessed from the side so the character will have to kind of side step into the ladder rungs. I thought I would leave the root bone stationary and key torso, IK feet and hands as needed. However as I block out my contact pose on the ladder I have noticed that “copy pose and paste inverse” seem to be mirrored across an axis relative to the stationary root bone position. Is this normal for a rigify setup? I would appreciate any help on the best way to proceed?




One idea is to go in reverse. Put the entire rig in the center of the ladder. Start the character off to the side and then move it into the center (zero) position which is over the ladder. Once you start climbing down the ladder you can then mirror your poses.
