How to Convert 2D Images to 3D Objects in Blender!

Hey Everybody! In this tutorial, I will be explaining how to take any 2D image and convert it into a 3D object in Blender. It’s not that hard to do. We will begin by importing the image as a background image, and then we will be tracing it with a curve object. Also, if you stick around to the end, I will show you how to make a cool wallpaper to display your new 3D logo/image.

Thank you Blend Master, I have learned something new about curves, indeed!

Above all, I learned how easy it can be to work with them.
So far I’ve never been familiar with curves in Blender.

Could do that but it’s also possible to trace the image in a vector graphics program and import as curves in Blender.

That can be a much faster workflow. How much faster depends on the complexity or the amount of images. Once they’re in Blender, could adjust multiple curves at a time or join some of them. Adjusting the curve resolution can also be important, especially if they’re converted to mesh.

I’m glad you found it useful!

Curves are very underrated despite how helpful they can be in many different situations.

Yes you are correct, that is another possible way to achieve the same effect. However, my goal was to just show that it could be completely done in Blender. Also, the techniques used in this video could be applied to many other projects besides just making 3D objects from 2D images. Thanks for sharing.

Can also use the Grease Pencil which can be converted to curves or a curve if you join your strokes prior to converting. Thanks for the tutorial btw.

No problem, and thanks for sharing your idea. I would have never thought of that.

Seriously, this is a really time consuming way in my opinion. Even if you need to download and install some vector program like for example Incscape which is free, chances are it will not take as much time as to do it manually plus you will have a way to save time in the future.

This is true if you start from a simple image that can be easily converted into vector, but if you want to extract a shape from a more generic image like a photo, you will likely have to retrace it manually.

This tutorial shows the difficult way, the process to follow to get a 3d shape from any reference you have; before seeing it I thought it was a difficult process, but I saw that, having a good mastery of curves in Blender, it is not really difficult nor slow.

I am not arguing about the importance and benefits of learning to work with curves or with reference images. The title is misleading in my opinion as nothing is actually converted in the tutorial and it is not easy compared to other workflows for the specific case shown in the tutorial because in this specific case the image could actually be converted to vectors to make life easier. If it was called ‘Using Image Reference For Modelling With Curves’ I would not have said anything.
