Everyone has to start somewhere. I already had some 3D experience when I did my first piece of creature work, but it didn’t look too hot either.

Generally, a good workflow when doing creature work would be doing the overall shape with Dyntopo (using symmetrical sculpting), performing a retopo with a separate mesh together with the shrinkwrap and mirror modifiers, and then applying textures, shading, displacement, and other details.
