What does Blender Trunk mean?

I asked a developer where his new features he developed are and he said “in the trunk”. I don’t understand. Do i have to wait until the next release 2.78 to see these new features?

Thank you

Imagine a tree. The tree’s trunk is the main part of the tree.

Then it has branches which are not the main part of the tree.

If some feature is in trunk, it’s part of the main code and therefore can be found in any new versions of Blender.

If it’s part of a branch, it has yet to be brought into the main code and that means, if you wanna use that feature, you’ll have to find an unofficial ‘branch’ version.

If a feature is ‘now in trunk’ it means it used to be found only in a branch, but is now (as you may guess) part of the main code.

For what it’s worth, the term “trunk” was used more frequently when Blender developers were using Subversion as the version control system. Since they’ve migrated over to Git, the more correct term is “master branch” or just “master”.
