Challenge #774 Voting CLOSED

This week’s theme:

Pirate

After 2 days of voting, a winner is declared: The voting will close on Wednesday.
The winner picks the theme for next week.

[ If the winner doesn’t supply a theme before Thursday 22:30 GMT, the organizer will select the theme. In this case, the winner’s theme will be used the next time we are lacking a theme on Thursday 22:30 GMT. ]

Having selected the theme, the winner will not be eligible to enter that week. They may however still submit an image, but it won’t be included in the voting.

I little bit random, but have you seen this? It was made with the Grease Pencil from Blender 2.8, and it looks very impressive.

I voted for Ray13. Beautiful entry!

My vote goes to beau11 1000% epic awesome sunset  Little search in previous challenges and its clear to me that placing anything between camera and sun gives best chance to win XD

Some really lovely entries this week guys

Good job all. Guess pirate ship is going to be the winner.

Great entries guys.
Helge, I love the determined pirate rat!
Especially great how his tail weaves through the holes in that vessel, great composition.

@Helge Pie Rat :stuck_out_tongue:

Sunset version of my entry

I didn’t get enough time to make it very far with Metalbeard - “@Lego Movie”, i made an attempt at creating a “Pirates rules of the sea” for the challenge.
With the lack of time it ended up being closer to #2 “Always Abandon A Lost Cause”.

Very nice. Even if the 2.8 Grease Pencil evolved a lot, this must have been a tremendous amount of work.

Thanks! Everything worked out nicely this time. I had a few additional ideas (name plate, mouse trap canon, grapnel-tail, …), but at some point, getting some sleep felt like an even better idea.

That thought crossed my mind.

@FlyingBanana: I just remembered what you said a few weeks ago (see above). This theme seemed like a nice opportunity for having a little fun with the latest poll results: https://geoxis.de/blend/racing.php

LOL Helge that’s rather fitting to the theme this week.

Thanks for the votes everyone

Here be me comments, yer sea dogs:

3dnotguru: Nice boot! I also liked how everything is brown/woody, except for the gold.

MACEPRODUCTIONS: The hull of the ship looks quite nice and I also liked the sky. The ropes look a bit too rigid though.

DM9: Clever play on words with the treasure chest. I liked how the bear looks old, dirty and abandoned, just like a pirate! Just one thought: Did you consider putting the ball on the right side? Currently it is blocking the view of the bear, while there is plenty of space to the right.

ZavalasAgent: Cool mix of real pirates with internet ones. I liked the “old-screen” effect you added to the image.

NerdyGtal!: Beware of the big green button with “download”, “full” and “free”: It probably comes with a virus! I don’t have a smartphone, but the GUI design looks quite convincing. The hand looks nice too, but the pose doesn’t feel very natural: The person seems to be holding the smartphone with the fingers, not with the palm of the hand.

purbosky: Take me treasures, but let me keep me ship! I liked how the monster looks like a geological formation, until you see its red, murderous eyes staring at you… Bonus points for the black sails (not sure if realistic, but looks more piratey).

bnc: I was expecting one of them to be “System of a down - Steal this Album!”, but anyway. I liked the transparent cassette, but the material on the black one looks a bit too diffuse to me. Both models look nice though.

FlyingBanana: I liked all the scratches, dents and rust on the items. Really looks like something from a museum. I also found it amusing how you added a cross to the “things that go boom!” ;).

Ray13: Somebody won’t be needing the treasure anymore! It took me a while to see the water, but I liked the atmosphere. It feels like a pirate grove where somebody buried their treasures (and apparently all the witnesses with it!). I just think the strong light on the skull is driving attention away from the interesting things on the image. Maybe if you could get some nice reflections on the coins?

Cannon980: Haha, I really liked the duck, I need one of those! I also liked how the duck is the most saturated thing on the image, calling a lot of attention to it. The rocks look pretty cool.

PyBlend: After the glaciers melted, some penguins had to undergo a life of piracy in order to survive. I suppose to these fellas the most valuable treasure is fish! I liked how the lonely penguin is wearing a captain hat, even though the small boat does not have space for a crew.

beau11: This looks like the kind of thing you see on a post-card. Very realistic, and very good use of silhouettes. The ship also looks very detailed, and you even added some small islands around it! You really put a lot of work in this piece, well done!

joshwinkler3d: Haha, nice play on words! I really liked the material of the hull (are the sails made of IDE cables?). I liked the idea a lot, and the emoji on the flag was pretty funny too.

Iridesium: After months on the sea, this guy must smell wonderfully! I liked how the image feels disgusting, specially since that guy appears to be almost hugging the viewer. The face is well done, and looks very dirty. The only weird thing is that the clothes seem to be pretty clean.

fcharr: That would make for a pretty funny flag! The models look nice, although the finger appears to have one joint too much.

OLG: Really nice post-processing, this looks like traditional art! Really nice models, specially the boots. I also liked how the things seem to be abandoned there.

Helge: I’m afraid someone is not going very far on that tin can! The mouse looks really cute, and the fur is also pretty well done. I liked the subtle eye-patch too. Not sure if it is intentional, but this picture also shows a bit how throwing trash like cans on the ocean can affect wildlife. Maybe our friend would still be safe on land if it weren’t for the can. Or maybe it would’ve been eaten by a cat…

RobertT: Space pirates! I liked the idea of combining both man-o-war. The ships reminds me a bit of the sentinels of The Matrix, and also of a dragonfly. Is this a space station? There seems to be a ship coming out of it (or going inside)?

Photox: Really nice atmosphere, I almost feel like in the middle of a battle on the seas. I really liked the colours.

Congratulations to the win Beau11, time to come up with a new theme.
The ships model and rendering look really great, the only thing that strikes me as a bit odd when looking at it is, that the sails are fully blown, yet the sea is as calm as it ever could be?

  • My vote went to Iridesium´s pirate. The pose and expression is “gloriously pirate worthy” and also a bit scary. ^^

And finally. thanks to everyone that voted for my entry; - very much appreciated.

Edit: @ Millani, yes I tried the ball on the right side as well, but it felt too distracting from the sunlight reflection on the floor, that leads the eye to the chest. On the left it serves more as the first focal point in the image guiding the eye to the bear, reflection and chest. I also thought the layering in front of the bear would give the scene some more depth and introduce a bit more chaos into “grandmas`” attic.

If you guys want an early jump on the theme for next week I’m leaning towards Nostalgia. I like this theme because it means something different to everyone and there’s nothing I love more than a diverse set of entries

I’m not sure if this has been done, if it has let me know.

@Millani thanks for the input, and as for the cross it was actually in the original photograph I used for reference just it was laying down on the surface and not propped up and there was no compass either. Here is the image I modeled my render off of.

Thanks Millani! I didn’t plan to hide an environmental message in there, but the original idea contained a can, a lot trashier than this one. (Rusty and maybe some fragments of a decaying label, with only the letters P…I…R…A…T…E being readable.) But I didn’t have time for that.

I don’t think that this theme has been chosen before. Feel free to check out my little list of all previous themes.

And… the winner of Weekend Challenge 774 with 44.74% of the votes is… beau11!

Hoist the Jolly Roger!

@beau11 Well done :slight_smile:

@Millani Thanks for the comments - the sails are spreadsheets

The other parts are the Naval RAM, USB cannons, SATA cables on the riggings, HDD platforms and a floppy disk platform, a CPU fan wheel, PS/2 port mortars and the windows.

I did run out time with this one, the lanterns are capacitors too but it’s hard to tell. For the hull I used texture paint to make a bump map and used a wood texture for a normal map. Also played around with the principled shader.
