Smoke simulation viewport gpu rendering

Im running some smoke simulation, fire only to be correct, in blender 2.79 and I noticed that when the simulation runs in viewport, the whole workload is put on cpu, and absolutely nothing on gpu according to my task manager

I’ve set my rendering device to gtx 1060 in preferences and in render tab but it seems cpu is doing all the work with smoke simulation anyways

As far as i know, blender supports gpu rendering of smoke simulation so is this normal or ? does it not use gpu in viewport?

If the sim is not cached then it is being calculated by the cpu as it is animating. The simulation itself is cpu only. I can’t be sure from the screenshot though.

GPU rendering is not displaying the viewport it is when you render the scene (in the render settings)
